NICK ZINNER AND KAREN O; THE BILLY FARRELL AGENCY
Taking the stage at Don Hill's just before 1 AM, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs rocked the sardine-packed crowd of celebs and industry luminaries with a throwback set that brought back memories of the band in their club days, before they were selling out Radio City Music Hall, and when Karen O's antics still took you by surprise (on this particular occasion, the first number was performed in a gas mask and Navajo quilt). The DeLeón tequila was abundant, and photographers were out in full force to document the ensuing madness, though a few of them were off the clock. Mick Rock made the rounds as best he could, given the circumstances, and Terry Richardson seemed particularly anti-establishment in his decision to wear a blue flannel shirt to the show, as opposed to his uniform of red tartan. A beanied and bespectacled Josh Hartnett watched the set as coolly as possible. (The intensity of the show was matched only by the temperature of the venue). As the set came to a close with the New Order-inspired "Heads Will Roll," the crowd rolled out the door.
It was time to head north to check out Deadmau5's set at the Ibiza-transplanted techno room at Provocateur. Fresh off his gig as the house DJ for MTV's Video Music awards, Joel Zimmerman (A.K.A. Deadmau5) spun two hours of bone-crushing electronica that tested the limits of the million dollar, soundproofed room that has become the go-to late night party for fashion week attendees for whom 2 AM is the new midnight. Jim Carrey spent the evening, or should I say early morning, standing on the bleachers, while Michelle Rodriguez and Alessandra Ambrosio were buffeted by the geysers of icy fog that lined the space. The highlight of the night came towards the end of the set with the house remix of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing In the Name of." Even if 2am is the new midnight, 4:30 seemed a good a time as any to duck out on a Tuesday.
