Chloë Sevigny was among the dampened hordes who turned up at Opening Ceremony at the Ace Hotel last night to celebrate the fifth-anniversary relaunch of 34 dresses from Target's GO International designer collaboration series—but notable clotheshorse Sevigny wasn't there to shop. "I'm trying not to buy any clothing—I went for six months without buying anything," she said. But why? "I felt like I was just buying to fill a void, there, a little, so I'm trying to be happy in my own skin without having to have something new to wear."
With Big Love winding down, Sevigny also dished on the souvenirs she took from its set: "I saved some of the dresses, the ones on the compound," she said. Will she be retooling them? "They're in a closet—they're not being worn. I have all my rings and a couple things that were around the house that my character lived in." PHOTO, LEFT, COURTESY OF PICTUREGROUP/FRANK MICELOTTA
We noticed Anna Sui's husband quietly holding several dresses while his wife did another interview, and complimented him on his patience. "I'm just old!" he said, laughing. Sui, one of the designers GO International worked with in 2009, shared the story of her inspiration for her Target line: "I liked the way they approached me, because they wanted me to do it with a muse," she said. "I was traveling in Asia, and the amazing thing was that when I was doing my perfume tour, during lunchtime or when there was a break or when I was getting ready in the morning, all the young ladies would ask me, ‘Where's Williamsburg? What's downtown and what's uptown?' And I was like, ‘Why are you asking me these questions?'"
We nodded along, not quite getting where Sui was going with this, until she concluded triumphantly: "They were all watching Gossip Girl online!" Aha! "And I thought, this is a phenomenon, because it wasn't broadcast yet in Asia, but these girls searched it out online and were fascinated by it. So that became my muse—those characters."
Speaking of those characters, Michelle Trachtenberg, who plays devilish Georgina Sparks on the show, was among the partygoers sifting through racks of dresses designed by Thakoon, Rodarte, Jonathan Saunders, Temperley, and many others; she joined the likes of Lake Bell, Liv Tyler, Olivia Munn, Aziz Ansari, and Nina Garcia. After browsing the wares, everyone headed back to the bar for a performance by violinist Caitlin Moe, followed by Santigold (who made a Rodarte for Target frock look very chic). We took it all in from a spot near the bar, where, for some reason, an actor dressed up as Queen Elizabeth and another as, we think, Paul Revere were deep in conversation. (Elvis was also roaming around.) We raised a glass to Paul, who toasted back, and decided not to ask any questions.
