PATRICK MCMULLAN
Alexander Wang has a sweet tooth this season, which carried on from his collection to the flashing lights and the promise of cotton candy of his highly anticipated after-party. The full-fledged state fair took place underneath the Highline, and included bumper cars, a merry-go-round, and just about every carnival game known to man. It turns out that watching models awkwardly shoot hoops for teddy bears is just as entertaining as playing the game yourself, any sense of haute couture pretension turned to youthful bliss. Russell Simmons lingering by the line for the bumper cars as Terry Richardson busied himself popping off "self-takes" with friends on his digital camera, and the Midas of costume jewelry himself Phillip Crangi couldn't seem to keep a smile off his face.
It was as hard to leave the festivities as it was to get in (I was implored for my wristband several times within a few blocks of my exit), but the promise of a Hole reunion show at Don Hill's had this grunge fan heading south. Put on by Nur Khan of the Gramercy Park Hotel and Brent Hocking of DeLeón tequila (the agave alone turned out to be worth the trek), a mixed and distinguished crowd rocked out to a medley of Hole's hits and covers. "This next song sounded great in sound check," she shouted to the back of the club where Chris Noth was casually sipping his drink, "but let's see how you feel me after we get through it." While far from flawless, the ensuing garage rock cover of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" somehow made Love feel more relevant than ever. The simplicity of the chugging power chords seemed to coax out the raw power that put her on the map nearly two decades ago, and without Gaga's antics the song was able to stand by itself perfectly well (not enough credit is given to either of the artists' ability to craft killer songs). Love closed out the set with a throwback, Big Star's 1992 acoustic jam "Thirteen," and though the night didn't end with a band, it felt complete.
