Salman Rushdie's New Verse

Beautiful weather and the rooftop setting at the Bowery Hotel set a cozy scene for the launch party of Salman Rushdie's latest children's book, Luka and the Fire of Life. Bono, Zadie Smith, Isabella Rossellini, Jeffrey Eugenides and Sarah Sophie Flicker were all in attendance to hear readings from Rushdie and The Big C's Laura Linney.  As Jason Silva, host of Current TV, described, "It's not very often that we get to be told a story—we can close our eyes and picture the world they're creating for us. They both had wonderful inflection, wonderful nuance."  Post-storytelling, the crowd got down to the musical performances by Angela McCluskey and the The Little Death (named for the orgasm euphemism), led by Laura Dawn and featuring Moby on bass. As the party came to an end, Bored to Death's Jonathan Ames astutely summed up how Rushdie's fun fable mirrored the evening: "Anxiety was lifted for a moment and people were enchanted. I think the party ended up being like a children's book." And by midnight, guests left in good spirits before turning into pumpkins.
