Last night's "Party in the Garden" at MoMA was, as usual, really two parties. Inside: a dinner attended by the likes of Mayor Bloomberg, Glenn Close, Dionne Warwick, and various Rockefellers, who rubbed elbows between courses with American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani, Argentine installation artist Leandro Erlich, and British photographer Paul Graham, and the rest of this year's artist honorees.
Outside: a younger, less distinguished group bum-rushing the bars. A pair of twins drew extra looks, and it wasn't doppelganger music-men Andrew Andrew. It was two Marines in uniform—proud, few, and pretty clearly serving as arm candy for a pack of women trying go get more
bang for their buck out of Fleet Week. When DJ Cassidy handed the program over to Estelle, one of them could be heard muttering, "Excuse me, sir," as he made his way to the front.
The pop singer launched into "American Boy," causing optimists in the crowd to wonder whether Kanye West would materialize. He didn't. The chill in the air had made many girls think twice about checking their coats, and they let loose anyway—especially when Estelle yanked a bunch of them (and one lucky guy in a pinstripe suit) to bring their heat on stage. When Estelle coos, "Won't you come over, love, so I can show you love?" it's not really up for discussion. (LEFT: PHOTO BY PORTER HOVEY)
