Last night at London cinema The Electric, in Notting Hill, the Love Magazine crew partied on behalf of editor-in-chief Katie Grand's latest cinematic collaboration with Spanish fashion house Loewe, and the upcoming launch of the magazine's fifth issue. With Love Loves Loewe (how's that for a tongue twister?) posted on the marquee, Henry Holland, Pixie Geldof, and bloger Susie Bubble filed into the rouge-tinted theater to watch Blow Up. No, it was not a remake of Antonioni's 1966 classic, but rather an artful short which, featuring Anna Beatriz Barros's moodily-lit face, celebrated house's iconic Amazona bag. Shot by Hollywood special-effects guru James Lima, the film gets its name from the fact that the buttery-soft bags literally "blow up" into fierce balls of fire on screen. "It was beautiful. It made something so aggressive look elegant," said Henry Holland after witnessing the fireworks.
"I loved it! And I think James Lima is like, the coolest person in the whole world. I worked with him on one of the Love films and he was completely amazing," added Geldof who, wearing a flared Topshop denim jumpsuit and draped with crucifixes, took time out of preparing for her upcoming concert in Amsterdam to peep the film. "You'd think handbags would be simple to blow up. But [The Amazona] is really durable. They just did not want to explode!" said Katie Grand of the film's production. Clad in a black and red Chanel mohair dress and vintage Vuitton pumps, the editor-in-chief has been on fire herself the past few months. In addition to working on the film (the eerie music for which, it should be noted, was created by her husband and former Pulp bassist Steve Mackey), Grand has just sent Love's fifth issue, which hits stands on February 7, to print. The theme? Androgyny. "The last issue was so feminine and so curvy. Everyone looked like the number 8. In this issue, I wanted everyone to look like the letter I."
Naturally, Grand's chosen poster boy for the gender-bending issue was Justin Bieber. "He's a phenomenon. Everyone in the office is completely obsessed with him," offered Grand. And he's in good company, as Kate Moss and statuesque Brazilian transgender sensation Lea (formerly Leo) T, best known for her starring role in the 2010 Givenchy campaign, are cover-co-stars.
During the intimate post-film cocktail fête, Grand asserted that she's looking forward to London Fashion Week, particularly the Giles, Jonathan Saunders, and Topshop Unique shows that she's styling. But perhaps most exciting was her announcement that, in collaboration with Liberty department store, she will be hosting a LFW blow-out bash with New York Party King, Alexander Wang. "It's going to be insane!" she said, smiling. We don't doubt it.
