If you find yourself both anxious about the economy and attending an auction, there's nothing like a raw juice retreat to appease your zeal for spending and the subsequent worry lines. Last night's Tibet House auction at Christies witnessed a veritable trend in gavel grinding: yoga retreats, martial arts training, detox packages for buyers who don't necessarily want to show off their winnings, on their necks or on their walls.
Tibet is sometimes called the "roof of the world," and indeed Donna Karan, Uma Thurman, Arden Wohl, Petra Nemcova all came out to raise the roof-and some funds. The silent auction began with jicima, banana chips and an assortment of passed hors d'oeuvres, as guests bid on items like a Donald Baechler print (a steal at $1000), a directors chair autographed by Martin Scorsese, or dinner with the acclaimed critic Adam Platt. The live auction began with a choreographed dance by Tibetan children, before bidding began on swanky lunches, and trips, including a spirited battle for an 11-night stay at an oasis in Bhutan. Enough to take your mind off.
