Score one for the chinchilla! Last night, the Humane Society of the United States and a host of celebrities—including Angela Lindvall, Charlotte Ronson, and Fabrizio Moretti—gathered to celebrate the winners of the sixth annual "Cool vs. Cruel" contest at the Bowery Ballroom. Joining with the Art Institutes of America, the Humane Society educated hundreds of students about the animal conditions in the fur industry and had the contestants reinterpret runway looks with more animal-friendly designs.
Winner Valeria Krasavina admitted she had been surprised by the lesson. "I hadn't really considered it before," she said. Working off of a Burberry Prorsum prompt, Krasavina whipped up a gorgeous airy concoction of a cocktail dress that lost nothing in its loss of animal materials. Putting their money where their mouths are, the well-dressed crowd was vocally and sartorially adamant that fashion didn't have to include animal products. Anti-fur pins were rampant, and at the Humane Society's CEO Wayne Pacelle assertion that "1 out of every 30 Americans is a member of the Humane Society," the crowd erupted into cheers. In addition to the student winners, designers Victoria Bartlett of VPL and John Bartlett received awards (or "doorstops," according to Charlotte Ronson) for their work with animal-free materials. John Bartlett, who was also a judge for the student contest, echoed his fellow winner's stance on the use of animal products. "It's like what Victoria said: it's shameful the fashion industry continues to let this go on." But Bartlett remained optimistic, remarking on student work surrounding him. "Hopefully the next generation will take it on."
