"A lot of people said, 'Oh, another Haiti event,' and I said 'Yes, you know what, it's very important we keep it in people's minds," explained L'Wren Scott, who, along with friend Dr. David Colbert, organized an auction last weekend at Greenhouse in Soho to benefit those who lost limbs during the Haiti earthquake. With Scott and beau Mick Jagger's friends in the fashion, art and music worlds, the selection of donated items certainly was an efficient way to create awareness.
Actresses Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts were in attendance to show their support. Watts reported she had her eye on a work by Philip Taaffe: "I did notice a snake painting as soon as I walked in. My kids would love it—they love snakes, they love any creepy crawlies and animals. I love the color."
Rachel Feinstein, on the other hand, was struck by the fashion pieces donated by Thakoon, Narciso Rodriguez, and Zac Posen, among others. "So, far the clothes look really good," she said. Feinstein herself was wearing a lace dress made by her friend L'Wren Scott, but her shoe selection was based on a more limited choice. "I rebroke my toe after I came home from the Met Ball. I have to wear them again because they're so comfortable." While we're not sure her YSL platforms are podiatrist-approved for broken toes, we're taking notes in case of our own future ailments.
We asked her about inspiration in her own art. "I've been into ruins lately. I'm looking into any book I can on ruins. And also a palace that's just fallen apart in England or—you know you find these houses that have just become overgrown—so I'm trying to do something with that in my work right now."
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the auction included the selection of autographed guitars for sale. During the live auction, a Bruce Springsteen-autographed Fender Telecaster sold for $14,000, with a Mick Jagger-signed Gibson SG for $15,000. The silent auction sold a signed Keith Richards Gibson ES355 for $9,000 and an autographed Bob Dylan Les Paul for $10,000. By comparison, a baby grand piano, also autographed by Mick, only took in $5,000—perhaps the technophallus is popular in the auction crowd?
Nonetheless, guests swarmed Mick wherever he went.
At one point L'Wren pointed at some color on Mick's face. "I got lipstick on me now? A lady kissed me." Jagger said.
"She did! Darling!"
"And another lady kissed me too. And another lady said I dated her once in 1968."
Those lips still attract all the attention they deserve.
