"It's so funny," designer Nicole Miller, wearing a black, bejeweled Givenchy creation, said last night. "The last time I came to this event, I wore a Galliano gown, and [the photo captions] were like, ‘Nicole Miller in her own design.' And the year before I wore a Christian Lacroix dress: ‘Nicole Miller in her own design.' I want to see what they call this!"
The event in question was the annual gala for El Museo Del Barrio, which this year honored photographer Mario Testino, who received his award from a stunning (of course) Kate Winslet. Everyone wanted to ask Testino, though, about another famous Kate—the former Kate Middleton, Duchess Catherine, whose official royal-wedding photos Testino shot last month. He had nothing but fond things to say about the couple, and about Princess Diana, whose wedding portraits he took three decades ago. How does he keep his photos fresh after all these years? "I am really excited about everything I do, and it's what I enjoy the most," he said. "I guess it's like going on a boat! If you like the sea, and boats, you enjoy it every single time."
Speaking of weddings, America's answer to Britain's royal wedding might well be the upcoming nuptials between Lauren Bush and David Lauren (that's George W.'s niece and Ralph's son, respectively). When we suggested as much to Lauren's mother, Sharon Bush, who glowed in a seafoam Naeem Khan gown, she was tickled—and it seems she thoroughly approves of her daughter's intended. "You could almost put them on a wedding cake, they're so cute!" she said.
Though lots of designers were wandering around—Miller, Prabal Gurung, Christian Cota, Douglas Hannant, Donatella Versace—it was Narciso Rodriguez, also present, who made the two designs that absorbed most of the night's spotlight: for Winslet, a black and white silk faille gown; and for event chair Yaz Hernandez, a white silk crepe and satin asymmetric drape gown. Hernandez is prized in social circles for her sense of fun, and it was on full display last night. When we asked whether she had any advice for the camera-shy, she was at a loss. "I'm not the type, so I don't know! I say that there's not a party if there's not cameras—it just did not exist. I have, at home, a great photographer—my husband is an avid photographer, and so is my son, whom I'm very proud of." They take so many photos of her, she explained, that she's become immune.
As we watched the rest of the guests make their way into Cipriani—among them Alexandra Richards, Eleanora Kennedy, Courtney Love, Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, André Balazs, and Stephen Gan—we couldn't help but notice the footwear choices of Josh Hartnett and his girlfriend, model Sophia Lie: she wore candy-apple-red Miu Miu Mary Jane platforms, while he paired sockless brown Prada cap-toes with a—gasp!—black Prada tux. It takes a confident man to do black-on-brown, we said. "I thought maybe I could wear something a little different than the usual penguin suit," he said. We'll drink to that—and we did.
