Approachable Belgian: Dries Van Noten at Bergdorf

Until this week, the men's third floor of Bergdorf Goodman was entirely comprised of monotone and starkly curated boutiques. However, thanks to Dries Van Noten, it now boasts a Belgian parlor bursting with color and charm. Standing in front of an aquamarine studded sofa, Van Noten—the Belgian CFDA recipient with a penchant for horticulture—was only too ready to divulge his inspiration for the new space. "The decoration is partly inspired by the store in Paris," he explained, "where I also wanted to have the feeling of a personal apartment. In Paris, you have to ring the bell to get into the shop, and when you visit somebody, you really discover what this friend has to show you in that space."

While Van Noten's idea of a personal apartment is considerably more elevated than your average New Yorker's, with its intricately patterned carpets and Eastern vases, its effect was surprisingly accessible. The rich colors of the fittings were matched only by those of the garments surrounding them, proving to be the perfect complement. As friends and admirers of the label drifted through the space, you could almost imagine what it might be like to attend a soiree just off the Champs-Élysées, and though we were an ocean away, Fifth Avenue seemed to do just fine.
