Benefit Season: Get Creative

Creative Time, the storied 35-year-old art production non-profit, knows something about thinking outside the box. They are, after all, the organization that put Mark Tribe's Port Huron Projects, re-enactments of historic political speeches, in the de-politicized space of Times Square; and more recently put Marilyn Minter's luscious Green Pink Caviar videos in the same post-Giuliani city block. So it was no surprise that the gala was full of surprises. For one, it wasn't at the World Trade Center where every other gala has been this year—it was on the East Side, at the Regiment Armory. (Remember Marc by Marc Jacobs' epic Spring/Summer 09 show? Same place.) The theme was "Getting Lucky," and Magic 8-Balls and lottery tickets were both in stock. Artist Paul Ramirez Jonas won $5. But the highlight was bingo hosted by drag icon Linda Simpson—David Byrne and Cindy Sherman, both in attendance, might have bidded for a night with her, but all they were going to get was gift certificates to Opening Ceremony or Rodarte.
