Cobie Smulders on Self-Help, Dirty Jokes

As of late last week, the cast of CBS's How I Met Your Mother was two shoots away from wrapping up its fifth season. Cobie Smulders, the actress who plays the tomboyish Robin, spoke to us about her character, and what's in store for the show. (PHOTO: JENNIFER LOPEZ AND COBIE SMULDERS IN HIMYM)

INTERVIEW: You had a baby last year. Do you think you'd ever want to tell her your story the way Ted does on the show?

COBIE SMULDERS: Maybe leaving out some of it... But yeah, I could see it. I feel like Ted is such a romantic, which makes him such a good storyteller–I feel like I might flub the details. But I think it's important for everyone to know that their parents were people. I'm coming to that realization that I'm going to be seen as a mom to someone, and it makes you think about your own parents. You know, who were they?

INTERVIEW: After playing her for five years, has anything about Robin rubbed off on you?

SMULDERS: She has such a masculine side, and I feel like that rubs off on me. I've always been one of the guys, but when I play her I become more one of the guys. They get mad at me sometimes...I can be sort of filthy on the show, like in-between shooting. We sort of have a running a joke, and sometimes I take it a little too far with the...dirty sort of sexual acts we talk about. Josh [Radnor] is always shocked by what I can come up with.

INTERVIEW: Jennifer Lopez guest-starred as the author of the self-help book Of Course You’re Still Single, Take a Look at Yourself You Dumb Slut on the last episode. What was that like?

SMULDERS: She was awesome. She is completely stunning. They always said that to me, "She's so beautiful; her skin is flawless," and I was like, "Yeah, she's pretty, but seeing her in person was like, "Wow, she's beautiful." She's a pro. And she had a lot of dialogue–a lot of our guest stars don't, but she had a lot because her character was the instigator, so she has most of the dialogue. She's great, she's super sweet and friendly and on, and I think it turned out very well.

INTERVIEW: Have you ever followed the advice of a self-help book?

SMULDERS: I remember reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. He also wrote a book called The Mastery of Love that was sort of a relationship-self-help book, and I liked that...I remember being like thirteen with my girlfriends and we read Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus: In the Bedroom. It was a very R-rated version of that book, and it was just about sex and how to do it and how to experience it, and we didn't really understand anything but we thought it was hilarious.

INTERVIEW: Ever date a co-worker, a la Robin and Don?

SMULDERS: No, I managed to avoid that, which is actually sort of surprising.

INTERVIEW: Can you tell us what to expect in the coming episodes?

SMULDERS: I really don't know what's going to happen–we know nothing...I feel like the sort of Barney-Robin-Ted-Don foursome–what would you call that? A quadrille? A quad something–I feel like it's going to come to a head. And I don't know exactly what's going to spur it on, but I feel like there's going to be a dramatic ending. I don't know if robin will end up with one of them. Over the next few episodes it's revealed that some of the guys are having a harder time, and Robin wants to spend some time away from the group, because it's too hard to hang out all the time when two of the guys are ones she's dated. I feel like the dynamic of the group is switching a bit, and I feel like it will come back together into the end, but I don't know what it will be.

A new episode of
How I Met Your Mother airs tonight on CBS at 8PM.
