Dandy for Warhol

Tuesday night the Clic Gallery, Interview, and Seven for All Mankind celebrated another side of Warhol with the opening of Andy Dandy, by the Hilton Brothers. The photos consist of Warhol's legendary "Altered States" portrait session with Christopher Makos. In the pictures, Warhol, wearing wigs and full makeup, looks surprisingly vulnerable. Accompanying each portrait is a gorgeously vivid close-up of a flower by Paul Solberg. Clic Gallery owner Chrsitine Celle says they've never been more relevant: "I think the idea of mixing [the work] makes it contemporary. For a lot of people so much is known about Andy Warhol—Andy is everywhere, but the fact that these [portraits] are with beautiful flowers... I think it's very surprising for people."

Makos and Solberg, also known as the Hilton Brothers, wore matching floral suits standing, out in the sea of black-clad New Yorkers. Before getting overtaken by the crowd, Solberg talked about the unexpected pairing: "There's something that gives [them] a whimsical provinciality...Some of the [pictures] are suburban, some of them are trying to be sophisticated, some are trying to be sexy.  We both find them fun and whimsical."  Watching the crowd at the show–snapping up books by the artists and anything else with Warhol's face on it–it was impossible to miss his impact. Asked why Andy still resonates with people today, 23 years after his death, Makos joked, "He has the best publicist in the world."
