Music
In Search of...Devo
04/26/2010 10:00 AM
It's often forgotten that, in life, the thrill is often in the chase. This past trip to Coachella proved an excellent reminder. My goal was to get to the desert and drink it all in—the hippies, the freaks, the ravers, the inebriated college students, and of course the line-up—and my holy grail was to meet the legendary music group Devo. I wanted to pick their brains, and they weren't even headlining (that honor went to Jay-Z), so I thought it was no big deal. Let me tell you, finding Devo is harder than I could have ever anticipated.
Lo and behold, the closest I got to the band was about five people away from the stage as they played. They played a great set—which is the bright side. The other part of it was the fans. As I wandered the premises, trying to figure out how my great Devo search would take shape, I came across Devo fans I never knew existed—young kids, older couples, a local strip club manager named Terrin (as in "tearrrrrrin it uppppp!"), three struggling rappers, Mario and Luigi, a gaggle of really hot, stoned chicks, and even a Richard Dreyfuss doppelganger who told me that I was Devo. That's just what I can recall. This is the video I made on my fan cam over those few days. I came, I saw, I didn't meet Devo—but I conquered.
