Polished, Not Prom
09/21/2009 06:08 PM
From the runway to the red carpet, hair is being coiffed into the chignon this season. Be it high and slightly deconstructed at London's Graeme Black or resting at the nape of the neck at Vena Cava, a bun is the hair trend to master. At last night's Emmys, Drew Barrymore, Debra Messing, Leighton Meester, and Hayden Panettiere all wore a version of the tight bun. (PHOTO: AT CAROLINE SEIKALY)
Cole Golein of the Byron and Tracey Salon has dubbed the chignon the season's "it" look. "You're polished without prom. You can rock a classic one and wear it to the Oscars. You can wear a deconstructed one with a leapord dress to the VMAs. It's versaitile," says Cole. "You can see it from every angle and it gives light to the dress."
To recreate a version of the chic chignon at home, celebrity hair stylist Philip, who created the petite chignons for Caroline Seikaly's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week presentation, says to "Spray the length of your hair/ponytail with holding spray before twisting your hair into bun. The hairspray gives texture to the strands, allowing them to be easily manipulated. Most people spray the bun after, when they are already have the hair pinned and set–this is a much less effective method for keeping the hair in place."
