Kate Fleming, and her Mini-Kate
The iconic letters C and G have some American-born competition from a pair of interlocking K's, based on the signature of Katherine Fleming. The young New York-based designer mixes an haute sensibility passed down from her chic, art-collecting grandmother, with Downtown know-how. She's an "It" Girl, and now she has her own "It" Bag to match. Witness the materials—python, Italian leather, and classic chain link strap—that nod to classic lady's handbags, in jewel tones and Disco metallics, and leather that's corrugated rather than quilted.
I first met Kate when she was designing accessories for Club Monaco. Soon after she was on her way, last year designing CFDA-Award winning accessory collections for Tory Burch. Spring 2009 marked the launch of her eponymous line of handbags, so this season is the first time you'll see them in stores. My favorite bag is the Signature Betty Zip clutch, a style Fleming came up with after carrying around an old envelope purse that she wore folded in half. For Fall/Winter she re-worked the Kate, the bag that started it all, into the nightlife-ready Mini-Kate. (LEFT: THE BETTY)
Now if only I can get her to do men's.
